On Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, there was a benefit held for Keegan Smith in the performance gym. The benefit was held to raise money for Smith’s medical expenses after a recent medical diagnosis requiring ongoing treatment and care. The benefit took place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. There were approximately 800 people that came out to the school and gave their support to Keegan. Together, all of these people raised a record amount of money. The benefit included food, provided by Steve Ehrhart, as well as a silent and live auction. Some of the items in these auctions included, pedal tractors, power tools, goodie baskets, clothing items, house decor, and baked goods.
Junior volunteer Alayna White said, “It was so great to see our community just come together for Keegan. We had such a great turnout. My eyes were opened to how giving Wayne City really is.” A senior, Jacob Thomason, who also volunteered and attended the event, stated, “I thought it was amazing to see the community come together in support of Keegan Smith. It was crazy to see items such as a cream cheese Danish sell for 800 dollars. I was glad to be able to help out one of my brother’s best friends.” The benefit had a very good turnout, and Smith mentioned that he was extremely grateful for everyone that helped to make this event possible, and that it was amazing how many people came out in support of him.
