On Wednesday, February 19, the Wayne City FCCLA chapter put on a Blood Drive ran by the American Red Cross. According to FCCLA Coordinator, Mrs. Laura Miller, the Wayne City FCCLA has done at least one blood drive fundraiser every school year in all her years of teaching. The blood drive that the FCCLA puts on usually has a pretty good turnout. Anyone can sign up to donate as long as you are over the age of 16. “The blood drive is often very stressful for the FCCLA chapter, but we get a very good turn out so that makes up for it,” JoAnnna Leonardi (12).
Blood drives are very important in the local community because they collect blood to help save someone in need. Every time a person donates blood that person could potentially be saving up to 3 lives. This year alone, the Wayne City FCCLA has put on 2 successful Blood drives consisting of many participants. The Blood Drive was scheduled to have 28 people donate, and 24 people followed through and were able to give blood. “The blood drive was super fun this year and my favorite part about it was helping get people checked in,” said Abbie Young (11).
The donors varied with age. Quite a few adults signed up to give blood but the leading age for donors was the high school age group. Twenty-four high school kids signed up and successfully donated blood.
