The Wayne City High School elective options expanded this year. The languages offered changed from the common choices of Spanish and French to more diverse options including seven language options of Russian, French, Spanish, Arabic, German, Portuguese, and Vietnamese. That is an increase of three new languages spoken in the class compared to last year, and a five language increase from the year before. The amount of people speaking each of these languages fluctuates. Two students are learning Russian, French has three learners and Spanish has sixty-three learners as the most dominant language being learned. Senior Will Braddock took Spanish for three years. “I have enjoyed having a Spanish class for these last few years. Each year I have had friends in my class, and it is always a good time hanging out with them and playing games when we don’t have Spanish to do,” Braddock said. One student is currently learning Arabic, German has four total learners, Portuguese has two learners and Vietnamese has one learner. Although there is an increase in languages being learned, Spanish still stands as the most dominant language chosen by Wayne City students. One of the first people to choose a different language, Kane Borah, started learning German to have diversity in the class and connect to his family history. “I chose German at the end of my Junior year to have a little diversity in the classroom of what people were learning. The main reason I chose to take German my Junior year was because my family came to America from Wurttemberg, Germany,” Borah said.
