The 2017-2018 school year is officially in full swing! In celebration of a new school year, a survey was given to 20 high school students, 10 boys and 10 girls, asking them one simple question: “What is your number one backpack must have for this school year?”

Out of the twenty students surveyed, two of them said an extra pair of shorts. Nate Barbee, a junior,  was one of these students and when asked why he kept an extra pair of shorts with him, he said, “You never know when an accident is going to happen! Better safe than sorry.” Two students said they always keep deodorant with them in their backpack. A senior, Maddie Clark mentioned she always keeps it with her because one of her friends always needs it.

Four students said extra cash. A freshman, Kent Miller said, “ I like to keep a few dollars or quarters in my backpack, because I always want to buy a soda from the soda machines after school is over.”  Six students said gum was their number one must have. “Keeping a pack of gum with you at all times is one of the smartest things you could do. You never know when you might need it. Whether it’s because your breath doesn’t smell too good or you just need something you occupy yourself, gum is a lifesaver,” says Kylee Keele, a sophomore. Six students said their headphones are their number one backpack essential so they are able to listen to music on their phone during lunch time. A senior, Jaxon King said, “You never know when you just wanna jam out, so always keep some headphones with you.”

According to some Wayne City students, keeping an extra pair of shorts, deodorant, gum, some extra cash, and headphones with you in your backpack at all times is the key to surviving the school year. A junior, Rylee Greenwalt said, “Keep anything and everything in your backpack that you might need. In the end, your backpack should be specific to you and your personal needs.”
