More Than A Donation

According to the 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey, 60.2 million households own a dog. But many owners have never thought of their pet as a life saver.

A dog named Star was found in a plywood box with a litter of her puppies. They had no water or food, according to DVM and owner of Murphy Animal Hospital in High Ridge, Shannon Flegle. Star had given birth to 13 puppies but nine survived. All nine of her puppies were thriving, but she was dehydrated and under nourished. By the time Star was at the hospital, she was in advance kidney failure and having seizures. After many weeks of medical care, she had bounced back. She was adopted by Flegle and her husband Jeff.

Star was doing well until she started vomiting, and she would not eat one day. Tests showed that Stars’s kidney was failing. Flegle found a surgeon at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). The surgeon said that he would consider Star’s case except only if they had a familial match for the kidney. Luckily, Star’s puppies were still in St. Louis, Missouri. Flegle had still kept in contact with the people who had adopted Star’s puppies. One of the puppies was adopted by the Murray Family. They named the puppy Elsa. The Murray family was not ready for the call they received.

Through tears, Flegle explained to Murray about Star’s health problems and the need for a kidney transplant. Flegle asked Murray to reach out to the puppies’ families to see if anyone would be willing to get their dog tested. On October 10, they performed the rare kidney transplant on the mother, Star, and the daughter, Elsa. Thirty-six hours later, her blood work was normal. Both dogs are back home in the St. Louis area recovering. Both of the dogs are living normal lives. Elsa, is now known as the superhero dog.
