Making History

As both teams stepped onto the floor, the crowd roared as their minds are filled with anticipation of whether their team will be taking home this big win. Sophomore Greenlea Vaughn stated, “The energy in the gym was unmatched, I’ve never been to a game with that much energy in the stands.” The outcome of this game was up in the air since both teams defeated one another early on in the season. On January 22, Wayne City Indians face off against county rivals, Cisne Running Lions, as they played for the Midland Trail Conference championship title. The Indians trailed the Lions most of the game until the middle of the fourth quarter when they broke the lead into only single digits. Only being down nine points, gave the team high hopes of coming back and bringing home the big trophy.  They went on to tie the game and go into overtime and eventually double overtime. Gavin Featherling, a player from Cisne, was sent to the line for two free throws.  He missed both of the free throws, which would have resulted in a different outcome of the game. The final score was 66-63, with Wayne City taking home first place in the Midland Trail Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. Senior Taj McKinney said, “It was such a cool experience to be a part of the team when we achieved this, since this was the first time we have ever won it.”  The Indians had two players selected for the all-conference team, Justin Durham and the MVP of the tournament Taj McKinney.
