A certified nursing assistant (CNA) helps elderly people who cannot take care of themselves. At Wayne City, high school students can take a CNA class. Many students want to participate in the CNA program because they enjoy taking care of people. The class takes place from January through May. After passing the class, they have to take clinicals to learn what to do when starting the job. Also, students learn to understand what each resident needs. The classes take place at Rend Lake College. Many students do the classes now because Rend Lake College has a grant that pays for the tuition and pays for the state exam, student fees and books. All students who do the classes will have to drive to Rend Lake Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the class from 4:00pm to 8:15pm. When taking CNA classes, it is a lot of responsibility for the students who decide to do it. They must like taking good care of each resident and knowing what they need. Each student that does the classes earns a CNA certificate. Signing up for the class requires that each person has the money and time to do the program, and that they know all of the needed forms and paperwork and complete them correctly. Students also must get materials for the program such as scrubs and stethoscopes. Students have to make sure they get each item needed to do the clinicals and know how to use each item that is needed for the residents to help. ‘’I think CNA is good for learning new things and can be a fun experience,’’ said CNA student Riata Williams.
