On January 28 the Wayne City Indians played the Webber Trojans. It was a home game for the Indians, being hosted in the Conrad J. Allen Gymnasium. The Indians were ahead by 2 points. They came out hot and played great defense against the Trojans and held them to 12 points in the first quarter. However, through the next three quarters, the Indians did not play as well as their first quarter. At half time the Trojans were ahead by 5 points. Before the game, the Indians knew they would have their work cut out for them. They knew that they would have to put up a great effort to guard Nathaniel Marlow. He is currently averaging 30.5 points per game. The Indians put effort into guarding Marlow, holding him to just 13 points. The Indians gave up backdoor layups, destroying their efforts to overcome the Trojans. Although the Indians focused their defense against Marlow, they gave up many backdoor layups to the other players. Senior Ryan Strader said, “Our team’s effort of guarding Nathaniel Marlow was a success. However we lacked help and any other defense on the zone, if we fixed that it would help us to win.” Landis Musgrave, a sophomore, said, “Playing Webber is always fun, and this year they have a tough team. Our effort on defense was not enough, and that lost us the game.” Although the Indians lost against Webber, they will next prepare for their next back-to-back matchups, playing the Edwards County Lions on January 31 and the Johnston City Indians the day after.
