On January 6, Wayne City High School was scheduled to go back to school from Christmas break. However, the weather had different plans. The day before students were to return back to school all of Southern Illinois was invaded by a huge ice and snow storm. This storm caused all of the nearby schools to shut down for the next few days. The ice completely covered the roads and cars were not able to back out of driveways. Wayne County roads were covered in a thick layer of slick ice, causing buses to not be able to get down the roads to pick up students. Wayne City School ended up getting that full next week off of school, plus the next Monday.
Opinions on this “snow week” differed among the student body. Some students loved the extra few days off of school but some students were tired of the cold weather and ready to get back in the classroom.
“During our week off of school, I was annoyed with my brother so I decided to lock him outside of the house in the snow for a few hours. Do not worry, he had a coat on. So overall, I would say that my week was pretty good,” said senior JoAnna Leonardi.
“The snow week we had was a very “mid” week even though we did not have to go to school. I already felt like we had been out long enough and at that point I wanted to go back. I did not enjoy it that much because we were snowed in the whole time. I was not even able to go out and use the snow days to do anything fun because it was so cold out,” said junior James Walker.
