Mr. Choate: One of WCHS’s Toughest Teachers

Hannah Huston

In almost every high school there is always that one teacher or class that you feel it is nearly impossible to get an A or high grade in the class. At WCHS that teacher is Mr. Lamar Choate. Mr. Choate has been teaching all WCHS Social Studies classes for the last 24 years.

When asked why he thinks his students have so much trouble in his classes he replied, “I teach something students do not think they are interested in and most students do not think history relates to them.” Choate says his hardest class would have to be World History, but his favorite class to teach is American history. Choate has his Master’s Degree in teaching American History.

When asked why it is hard for students to get A’s in his classes Mr. Choate said, “When I was hired here 20 some years ago there was still social studies on the state testing, and the students were scoring low scores. I was asked how I planned to raise them and said I was going to make my classes harder and challenge students so then when they take the test they will think ‘oh this is easier than what we do in class.’”

When asked if he thinks the way he presents the history subjects could be hard for his students to understand, Choate said, “No, because if I thought it was hard to understand i would not present it the way I do.” Choate may be a tough teacher at WCHS, but he cares for his students and wants them to exceed to their highest potential. Students may believe his classes are hard but Choate just wants to challenge his students to the best of their capability.
