Comparing American basketball with Italian basketball

Enrico Carbonetti

Many people do not know the differences between American and Italian high school basketball. Basically, many aspects of play are the same in both, but some roles do differ. First ,in Italy, the teams are not involved with the school as in America, but there are club teams for all ages. In the American high school there are two teams, one team made of seniors and juniors called “ Varsity”, and the other team, “Junior Varsity”, which is composed of sophomores and freshmen. In Italy the teams are composed by players of the same age, so during the high school season you do not play against teams older or younger than you. Usually in the States the basketball high school season starts at the end of Autumn; in Italy it starts at the begin of Autumn, and the schedule of the games changes as well. So the rules are rather different, though the biggest difference ruyle is that in America each quarter is for eight minutes and in Italy it is for ten minutes. But one thing that Italian high school should have are the cheerleaders, because they make a great atmosphere for the game by involving the spectators into it.
