Harvest Time

Austin Schuster, Reporter

With harvest in full swing and all the local farmers busy about, it’s hard to focus on anything else except getting the crops out before the first frost. However, with all the potential setbacks during harvest, even that can be tough. Farmers can have breakdowns and rain, which causes replant and makes some of the fields ready but some spots that aren’t.

Perhaps the biggest upcoming setback facing farmers involves the coming winter. The first frost haunts farmers all of fall, especially this year, as it was very rainy in the spring. Therefore, all the crops got in the ground late, which pushes the harvest back even later. Local farmer Isaac Loker stated, “It’s been a tough year for the farmer. It’s not our worst harvest, but it’s definitely isn’t our best by any means. Either way, we’ve got to keep going, stay positive, and hope for next year.”

Every year is a constant struggle for farmers, and every year brings new challenges and new obstacles to overcome. The rain last week has brought yet another string of challenges and delays, but the farmers have recovered great and are now back at it. Farming is not for everyone, but, for some, it is in their blood and a way of life to provide for their community!
