Ohana Means Family

Kylie Reed, Reporter

What is the definition of family? The world interprets the definition of family in a variety of different ways throughout different cultures. Dictionary.com says family is a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not. When thinking of a modern family, most people would automatically think of a family as a group of individuals living together in the same household with multiple people.

Family can either be something learned from watching others, or something someone was just thrown into, not knowing how to react to it. Foreign exchange students, for example, are thrown into a whole new setting and country, with a family of strangers. When asked about her new family for a year, senior Alicia Garellick said, “Adapting to a new family could be difficult, but I had the chance to end up in a really nice and open, honest host family. It wasn’t hard at all for me to adapt and feel like a part of their family.”
