How To: Edit a Photo

Jaden Boyd, Reporter

When it comes to editing photos, there are often far more steps than most people understand. It’s more than just simply adding a filter and adjusting some colors. In fact, most photo editing apps have many more tools and tricks than the average person knows. The first step to editing a photo is cropping and trimming the image to the desired size. Also, make sure to straighten noticeably crooked lines in the photo. Almost all basic editing apps will have the correct functions to solve these problems. Use the cropping, adjusting, and skewing tools to trim the image. Next, find the spot-cleaning tool. This will allow the image to be cleansed of any marks and correct any accidental mistakes, including spots that were on the lense while taking the photo. After the image is spot-free, experiment with tools like white balance, exposure, and contrast. Using these functions will balance the color and brightness of the image. Temperature and tint tools are also helpful functions that will take the photo to the next level, and make it eye-catching instead of bland and colorless. Moreover, adjusting the saturation and color vibrancy can make the photo even more exciting. Playing around with all of these tools will transform the image into a kaleidoscope of color, instead of simply leaving the colors how they were captured in the moment. Finally, if needed or desired, adding a filter to the photo and adjusting the character can give the final pop of intensity it needs. Editing is a learned art, and cannot truly be taught until using trial and error tactics. However, the basic steps are fairly simple and extremely beneficial to know when going into the photography field.
