Tip of the Day, Tip Your Server!

Tip of the Day, Tip Your Server!

Amber McGhee, Reporter

Tipping at a restaurant has always seemed like a touchy subject. Many struggle to figure out the right amount to tip, while others believe it’s not that big of a deal to tip. While many do make the efforts to tip, some don’t. Servers hardly ever make any fuss or complain and many are fortunate to have a job that has potential to pay a decent amount of money.  Sometimes, when they don’t get tipped, it is detrimental to the way that they live. The average server in Illinois make five dollars and eighty-five cents an hour, while minimum wage is eleven dollars an hour. That means that they make about half the amount than the average working person. This is a huge reason to tip, even if it’s a a few dollars. Waitresses and waiters also do a lot more than it might seem like they do. At a restaurant servers usually have to help prepare the food and they also have to make sure you have everything to make your experience a great one. Servers get complaints and are always forced to be the middle man between the cooks and the customers, so you can imagine the situations they can be put in. Rileigh Irwin, a waitress at a local restaurant says, “I don’t really mind if I don’t get tipped every once in a while, but it can really effect how I have to spend my money and how hard I have to budget since I don’t bring the biggest paychecks in every week.”
