Willett Returns

The Wayne City baseball team is coached by Landon Willett. Landon is an alumni of Wayne City High School and was in the class of 2017. He was an assistant for 1 year and has been the head coach for the past 3 years. He was the assistant under Drew Millwood in 2019. Landon played all 4 years in high school as an Indian. He also played basketball for all 4 years. He coached his first full season in the spring last season, (2021), due to COVID wiping out the 2020 season. This year, Landon is coaching a co-op team between Wayne City and Webber for the first time in his young coaching career. This co-op of the two schools is a deal for two years but possibly more. Landon had found success his first year as an assistant, being apart of a team that went to the regional championship, but falling to Gallatin County. His first year, he inherited a very young team having only 2 seniors. In the 2019-2020 fall season, the team had found success at the latter part of the season especially capping off the campaign with a big win over Odin. As everyone knows, the Spring of 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19.

I feel like we used the fall time to adjust to the coop and come together as a team. There was a lot of learning we needed to do about each other, stated Willett. I feel like in our last games we really came together as a team and played like I feel we should be able to. My thoughts for the spring is that we should be able to compete on every game on our schedule. We have the pieces to be a very competitive team in our conference this season and I hope we do just that.

This past fall season ended on a very high note coming off a enormous win over Odin. When Coach Willett was asked why he wanted to return back to his high school and coach he replied with, “I loved the sport and the school itself. I was always proud to be a part of Wayne City High School and just wanted to continue being apart of it even after I was out.”
