Wayne City High School is stepping onto new ground this year with the introduction of the golf team. For the first time in years, students have the chance to take their talent from the classroom to the course, representing the Wayne City Indians in a whole new way. Nate Caudle, the last golfer to represent Wayne City, did the sport individually, with his last season completed in the fall of 2016.
Golf may again be a fresh addition to the school’s activities, and excitement is already building as students tee up to learn and grow together. The Indians’ new golf team is not just about hitting drives and sinking putts— it is about creating opportunity. While some students have never played golf before, others have quite a handful of experience. This sport gives them the chance to try something new while building friendships and school spirit.
Students including Junior Landis Musgrave and Sophomore Sophia Dohman are excited to finally have a golfing team again. Dohman just started golfing and is already excited. She enjoys the calmness of golf and being united with her teammates. Landis likes the challenges the sport brings with it and is really purposeful in getting better at golf.
However there are some things that the players of the team do not like. Musgrave feels golf can be very frustrating, especially when a person has a short temper. Likewise, Dohman, she tells me how padding can be hard and upsetting.
Both were pleased by the outcome of their first golf team as Indians, saying their school spirit encourages them.
In the end, the new golf team at Wayne City High School gives students a chance to try something different, compete in a new way, and represent the Indians with pride. Dohman said, “If you’ve never done it, try it, because you’re going to be stuck with golf for the rest of your life.” For others, the experience is about joy and passion, with Musgrave saying, “I am just glad that I can compete in something I really enjoy.” With every swing, the Indians are building not just skills on the course but also memories and traditions that will last far beyond high school.
