From Monday, October 23 to Friday, October 27, Wayne City students and staff in both the grade school and high school will be participating in daily events for Red Ribbon Week to promote staying drug free.
Every day of the week, students will be given items that go with the theme of that day’s event with messages about avoiding drugs. The students who participate in the daily outfit events will be given rewards voted on by a committee of Red Ribbon members.
Monday is Pajamas & Stuffed Animals Day, where students can come in sleepwear and will be given the Red Ribbon. This year’s Red Ribbon states, “Be Safe. Be Kind. Be Drug Free!”
Tuesday is Barbie & Ken Pop Culture Day, which was a popular idea for the Red Ribbon Team because of the movie that came out right before this school year.
Wednesday’s theme is Babies to Senior Citizens. In the past, the high school classes would be locked to an age range based on their graduating year, such as freshman having to dress-up as babies, sophomores as toddlers and young kids, juniors as middle aged parents, and seniors being senior citizens, but this year all students can choose which age group to represent.
Thursday will be Hawaiian/Tourist day and the school picnic. The school picnic is set up by the Red Ribbon Team for the entire school on the front lawn.
Friday is Vintage Day with the theme being the decades. Students will dress up in clothing styles from the 1920s through 1980s.
One Red Ribbon Team member, Zoe Wiggins, excitedly stated, “I always love seeing everyone dressed up. Some people get super creative and that’s what makes it fun. I also really like eating lunch with the elementary students.”
Ruth Kissner, the sponsor of Red Ribbon Team, said,
“Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles. The campaign brings together parents, schools, and communities as we look for ways to keep students and communities drug free. We are looking forward to great participation, and we are especially excited about the schoolwide picnic on Thursday.”
Make sure to mark the days down in your calendar or take a picture of one of the flyers around the school so you don’t miss this fun week of dressing up.
