The Red Ribbon Team is spreading drug awareness in October at Wayne City High School. The Red Ribbon Team is trying to get staff and students at the school interested by hosting dress-up days. So far, students have dressed up in red to raise awareness, and on Friday, October 9, the community is invited to share in a picnic lunch on the school grounds. Senior Jacey Smith said, “At the picnic, I get to see all the little ones, and I love how it lights up their day just by sitting with them for lunch.” Students can also get a sweet treat. “Eat bugs, not drugs” was last week’s message, with students getting to eat dirt cake and gummy worms to raise drug awareness.
The team mixes in other drug and alcohol danger awareness activities into the year as well. Senior Abbie Young describes the activities of the team. “We have different dress-up days, and we hand out candy when it is people’s birthdays, just as a nice gesture. We also hosted the Stupid Cupid event in the past.” Stupid Cupid, an event hosted on Valentines Day, helps students learn about the dangers of drinking and driving.
The Red Ribbon Team helps kids understand the dangers drugs can cause. They try to help kids understand in fun ways like doing the stupid cupid. Every year they have multiple events to help the students in the school understand why it’s important to understand the life threatening events that occur with drugs and why it’s important to stay away from them. Senior Kaylee Bullard said, “ I think it is important, and I feel like more kids need to understand how life-threatening drugs really can be.”
