Coach Choate concludes his coaching career with gratitude

As his coaching career draws to a close, history teacher and volleyball coach LaMar Choate looks back with pride, humility and deep appreciation for the teams he has led over the years. What began as a simple opportunity soon became one of the most rewarding chapters of his teaching life.

“When I was hired to teach history, there were a couple of coaching positions open,” Choate recalled. “They asked which sport I was interested in, and I told them volleyball. They needed a coach so badly, they were willing to let me have it.”

From that moment, volleyball became more than just a sport to him– it became a vehicle for connection, teamwork and growth. When asked about his favorite memories, Choate does not point to a single game or trophy. Instead, he highlights the collective spirit of the players. “This is just a good group to coach,” he said with a smile. “Whether it is practice or games, watching them interact with each other and work together – that is what stands out. They operate so well as a team.” He attributes much of the team’s success to their strong chemistry and resilience. “They work together so well. They have talent and they are mentally tough. Nothing seems to bother them,” he noted proudly.

For Choate, coaching has always been more about than wins and losses – it is about teaching lessons that extend beyond the court. “You always hope that sports translate to life,” he reflected. “That you learn how to deal with good times and bad times in a healthy way. If I am modeling that, then I am doing my job.”

As he prepares to close this chapter, Choate admits to feeling both joy and a touch of sadness. “I am really happy for the experiences I have had as a coach,” he said. “This last year has been especially enjoyable because it is such a great group to be with. But there will be a little sadness knowing that part of my career is coming to an end.”

In his final season, Choate leaves behind not just a record of victories, but a legacy of teamwork, resilience and the lasting impact of a coach who cared deeply – both on and off the court.
