The Rise of Multilingual Students

Because America is Supposed to be a Melting Pot

Since the United State’s creation, it has been known as the melting pot of cultures. So why does almost 85% of the country’s population only speak English? Other languages are taught in schools, but students rarely retain what they learn in these classes.

So students have started taking the matter of language into their own hands. With the development of apps and programs like Rosetta Stone and Duolingo, anyone with a phone can learn any language in the world. It’s as easy as a click of a button. In 2016 the number of children who were bilingual was 22%, and only three years later it now at 24%. It may not seem like much, but 2% is about 1.2 million kids learning new languages. Maybe it’s all because of Duolingo’s insistent reminders to just “Take 5 Minutes to Learn Today!”
