Will Animals One Day Be Capable of Speech?

Beth Thompson, Reporter

Have you ever wished you could understand what your pet is saying? Wish they could talk back when they are told something? Sadly animals lack the vocal cords and mind set to do so. But with the help of technology, humans may be able to understand a little more of what animals are trying to tell us. Not with those silly apps that just say some randomly generated lines, but actual artificial intelligence that will read an animal’s facial expressions and the pitch of their calls and whines.

In fact, scientists at the University of Cambridge have made an artificial intelligence that can spot pain in sheep. Unfortunately technology that can legitimately ¨read their thoughts¨ or anything like that does not currently exist, but researchers are one step closer to finding out more about what these animals are saying. For example, lots of people specialize in studying dolphins, or cetology, because they are some of the most intelligent animals, some say the second most intelligent compared to humans. In one case, they translated a dolphins whistle and found out that it just wanted some seaweed. There is even a whole program used to decipher what mice and rats are saying, although, most people likely would not want to know. Who knows? Maybe one day scientists will be able to further understand what dogs are barking about at three in the morning. Many people can’t wait to find out.
