Manipulated By Advertising

Margot Lemonnier

Nowadays, youth are bombarded with advertisements all the time.

They are influenced, even without being aware, and the brain assimilates a lot of information.

A lot of ads are targeted at young people and can have a big impact. Indeed, a lot of ads are created with kids in mind, because they influence the consumption of their parents. So, when they shop with their parents, they recognize the products and ask them to buy it.

For older children, products are marketed to them as “must-have” items, implying that children won’t be liked by others and so parents feel guilty if they don’t buy it for their child. For example, fidget spinners were recently marketed as back-to-school necessities !

Advertisements aimed at teens are clever. Teenagers are driven by the desire to be the coolest, therefore ads make the product as it gives a cool feel.

As teens hate being influenced by adults, marketers let them persuade each other that a product is cool, and then, they spread the world.

Then, since teens look up to celebrities, they are sent free clothes in order to be seen wearing them and sometimes they were paid to say nice things about a product and so this influences what teenagers buy.

Advertising affects everyone. Whether aware or not, everyone is at risk of being manipulated into buying things when they see these advertisements.
