The holiday season has arrived and for some people it is filled with love and cheer, but for others it is just a reminder of what they lack in their lives.

Depression can be a troubling subject to talk about for some people. Many people struggle with this disorder. In fact, every one in ten Americans struggle with depression. So, how can individuals overcome it?

First off, what exactly is depression? According to psychiatry.org, “Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.”

People experiencing depression may have the following symptoms: Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood, feelings of hopelessness, or pessimism, irritability, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness, or loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities.

According to huffingtonpost.com, there are eight steps people can take to help overcome depression. These steps include: “Recognizing and challenging your critical inner voice, identifying and feeling your anger, engaging in aerobic activity, putting yourself in social or non-isolated situations, doing activities you once enjoyed, even when you don’t feel like it, watching a funny movie or show, refusing to punish yourself for feeling bad, and seeing a therapist.”

Depression can be a horrible feeling, but with the right help everyone can overcome it.
