Coachless, not Workless

Dane Horton, Ad Manager

Track and Field is an interesting sport at Wayne City High School.  Wayne City technically doesn’t even have a team, they are not funded by the school, and there is no coach.  All practicing must be done on their own on their own time. So track is pretty much an optional thing for anyone who wants to participate in the meets.

So far, only seven students have taken interest to the sport.  Dane Horton, Kyle Sledge, Dalton Smith, Marshall White, Kamden Pottorff, Austin Schuster, and Isaiah Miller.  These are the students that have participated up to this point, but there are still plenty of meets left. Wayne City has only been entered in four meets this year.  Many have been cancelled due to bad weather. Despite the low numbers and lack of practice, the track team has placed really well individually in a few of these meets.

First place holders are Dane Horton and Dalton Smith.  They have both gotten first at least twice in different events and have placed many other times.  Most of track is not whether you beat those your competing against, but rather if you can beat your own personal records.  Kyle Sledge (never having ran track in his life) ran a 27.77 second 200 meter dash. Every meet since then he has been shaving time off of that and is now down to 27.01.  His goal this year is to make it into the low 26 second marks.

These boys work very hard to get better at what they do.  Wayne City’s Dane Horton has went to state in the high jump two years in a row.  When asked whether he thought he’d make it this year he said, “Oh most definitely and I intend on bringing someone else with me this year.”
