Teacher Feature: Mrs. Sowa

Jayla Pendleton

Mrs. Sowa is one of the four new high school teachers at Wayne City High School.

Mrs. Sowa graduated at Joliet East High School in 1982. She then decided to go to the University of Saint Francis for her Master’s Degree. She chose to teach at Wayne City because her parents grew up here. Her mom graduated with the Class of 1963. When she came to visit as a kid, she would play with her cousins. She teaches Algebra 1A/1B, Algebra 2A/2B, and Geometry. What she likes the most about teaching is everything! She loves seeing her students succeed. What she dislikes about teaching is how long it takes to grade papers. One of the sophomore students said, “Mrs. Sowa is very helpful and open to assisting you with any homework problems you might have in her class.”

I asked her what advice she would give to her students in her classes and she replied,

” Always do your best!”

and

“When in doubt, ask for help!”

What most people don’t know about Mrs. Sowa is that she has never eaten a hot dog, and she has lived in 12 different places. In her free time, she likes reading mysteries and detective books. She also likes watching her 18-year old son, Payten, play baseball. He is currently going to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan this fall. She is also married to Rick Sowa, whom is retired. They have been married for 30 years.
