On Saturday, Jan. 30, the Wayne City Indians boys basketball team and cheerleaders departed from school for a four-hour trip to Indianapolis. The team had the opportunity to watch the Indiana Pacers face the Atlanta Hawks in an NBA game before playing their own game on the Pacers’ court.
After the four-hour bus ride, the teams arrived at their hotel. With a few hours to spare before the game, many students relaxed and spent time with friends while the cheerleaders prepared. Junior cheerleader Ellie Talbert said the time off the bus was much needed.
“I had so much fun getting ready for the game,” Talbert said. “I went to Katelyn’s room, and we listened to music the whole time. It was great finally being off the bus and being able to stretch.”
At 5 p.m., the teams walked to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers, to watch the NBA matchup. After going through security together, they found their seats and watched the Pacers defeat the Hawks.
Following the NBA game, the Indians took the court against Madison of East St. Louis. After a close, hard-fought game, Wayne City earned a victory on the NBA court, making school history in the process.
Head basketball coach Jake Talbert said the experience was memorable for everyone involved.
“The trip was a great experience for all of our student-athletes and fans,” Talbert said. “It was great to see our community come out and support us, even though it was three and a half hours away. I know our athletes appreciated that. Getting the win made it even better, and I hope we can do it again in the future.”
