Shutting down much of Southern Illinois, a winter storm blanketed the area with snow last week. After approximately 13 inches fell, school remained closed for four days following the weekend.
Classes were canceled because roads were deeply covered in snow and too hazardous for school buses to operate. For many students, waking up early to hear the automated “no school” call brought a different kind of excitement.
With no school and no e-learning days, students enjoyed sleeping in, taking a break from homework and spending time outdoors. Many students and staff took advantage of the extended break by playing in the snow. While the extra days off were enjoyable, some students and staff expressed concern about having to make up the missed days at the end of the school year.
The storm also affected local businesses and surrounding communities. Several businesses closed for a day or two because employees were unable to travel safely or because parking lots were icy and unsafe. At the same time, many Wayne City residents stepped up to help, using shovels and tractors equipped with blades to clear driveways and parking lots for neighbors and local businesses.
Senior Abigail Young said she made the most of the snow days.
“I had a lot of fun playing in the snow during break, especially when Avery and I went sledding,” Young said. “We went sledding for two days in a row, and we even caught air one time. It gave an adrenaline rush.”
