On Monday, March 9, the Wayne City High School varsity scholar bowl team traveled to Fairfield Community High School to compete for a chance to advance to sectionals. Before the competition began, the team made a quick stop at Mach 1 for an important necessity – caffeine.
Coach Jessica Fagan said, “I’m not even going to try and attempt to do anything until I’ve had my coffee.”
The team brought six players to represent the school: Dutch Peyton, Alayna White, Caylan Piper, Connor Gerrish, Benjamin Thomason, and Rhett Staley.
Wayne City started off the night with a 300-170 victory against Grayville. They were led to this victory by Peyton who scored a total of 11 toss-ups.
Peyton said, “I had to lock in for the power-ups, it was the only thing keeping me going.”
The team then moved on to its second match of the night against Fairfield. Wayne City was defeated 470-250. Despite this loss the team kept their spirits high and cheered on Fairfield as they went into the championship round.
Thomason said, “It was a really fun match. It was disappointing to lose but I think everyone played really well and that we did our best.”
After the competition, the team celebrated their final matches of the season by going out to dinner. After a long debate, they decided on Mexican food.
Staley said, “I’m glad we got food. That’s the only reason I came.”
The team spent the rest of the night reminiscing about good memories, discussing current topics, and enjoying their last night together as a team.
