Wayne City, IL- The Wayne City Indians ended a nearly five decade wait this season, capturing the MTC baseball tournament championship to their first tournament title this 48 years.
Wayne City secured the championship with a 5-3 victory, keeping the audience and coaches on their toes. They scored rather late in the innings, 3 runs in the fifth and 2 runs in the seventh inning.
The Indians received key offensive contributions throughout the game, including three hits by Kayne Gregory (11), two hits scored by Logan Schuster (11) and constant hits by Marschell Mays (11).
“It feels great to know that my grandpa once won the MTC tournament and now our team is in the same place after 48 years again,” Gregory said.
On the mound, Dawson Wood, who pitched for six innings, represented more than just a tournament win for the Indians.
Wood said, “After three years of loosing, it feels good to finally earn our hard worked win. Since I am a senior it is like a graduation gift.”
It marked the program’s first MTC title in nearly half a decade, ending a 48-year drought and creating a moment that players, coaches and our school will remember.
Draven Jones (11), who played left field, was a big fan of praying before the games and felt like it played a part in the win.
Jones said, “The praying circle is important to me because it gets us together and gets the spirit going.”
For Wayne City the long wait is over, and the Indians have a championship to celebrate. Overall, the team had a record of 8 wins and 15 losses, making the coach Jaxon King and the team proud of their achievements.
